Country: Switzerland
Organization: United Nations Population Fund
Closing date: 3 Apr 2024

UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.

We promote gender equality and empower women, girls, and young people to take control of their bodies and their futures. We work with partners in more than 150 countries to provide access to a wide range of sexual and reproductive health services. Our goal is ending unmet need for family planning, preventable maternal death, and gender-based violence and harmful practices including child marriage and female genital mutilation by 2030.

Surge is the rapid scale up of humanitarian professionals and resources in emergency settings. Over the last few years, UNFPA has become very active in surging qualified personnel due to growing humanitarian needs. These needs are met by using UNFPA’s Surge Response Roster, a staffing modality that provides technical experts to surge.

Selected candidates will be added to UNFPA’s Surge Response Roster and contacted for any job opportunities that meet their profile.

What We Offer:

  • The opportunity to make a direct impact during humanitarian emergencies, protecting the health and rights of women and girls.
  • Deployment for short term (3 to 6 months) surge missions as part of UNFPA humanitarian response.
  • A platform to utilize your expertise in Gender-Based Violence Prevention

We are looking for candidates with the following profiles to join our Surge Response Roster:

GBV Program Specialist to oversee the implementation of UNFPA’s GBV programming in a humanitarian emergency. UNFPA’s GBV programming in humanitarian emergencies is multi-sectoral and involves implementing partners and other stakeholders from the affected communities, such as NGO and government, UN agencies, and other national and international organizations that engage in comprehensive prevention and response initiatives in line with a survivors-centered approach.

GBV Coordinator to systematize prevention and response interventions within the humanitarian architecture coordination mechanisms, such as GBV Sub-Sector/Cluster and GBV working groups.

In cluster countries, the GBV coordinator leads the inter-agency GBV prevention and response efforts, with a focus on facilitating service delivery, informing strategic decision-making, planning and analysis, advocacy, monitoring and supporting contingency and preparedness capacities.

In IDP and mixed settings, the GBV Coordinator represents the GBV Area of Responsibility (GBV AoR) and works closely with the Protection Cluster and the Child Protection AoR in addition to other clusters in the area of risk mitigation and GBV integration across the humanitarian system.

In refugee settings, UNHCR leads all sector responses, while UNFPA is often asked to co-chair GBV prevention and response. While accountabilities and structures are different, GBV AoR standards and resources are applicable in all humanitarian contexts.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Compassionate and committed individuals with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with graduate degree (equivalent of a Masters)
  • Experience in management and/or coordination of multi-sectoral GBV prevention and response programmes in emergencies
  • Demonstrated understanding of survivor-centered approach, with experience promoting and integrating gender analysis into humanitarian programming
  • Strong technical skills and expertise in your field.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt quickly, and thrive in high-pressure settings.
  • Fluency in English is required; additional language skills are a strong advantage.

For Coordination post - understanding of the 6 functions of Coordinators.
